It has already been four years since the National Festival of Amateur Orchestras was held in 1992 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space in Tokyo to honor the 20th Anniversary of the founding of the Federation of Japan Amateur Orchestras, Corp. (JAO). The competition among five orchestras consisting of teenagers and young adults was very well received. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to His Imperial Highness Prince Takamado for his assuming the position of Patron for JAO and for his presence here.
Through my experience as the chairman of the Tokyo Festival, I have seen His drive and enthusiasm, and have been supporting His activities as one of the Advisers of JAO.
I am currently the chairman of the National Recreation Association of Japan. It really goes without saying, but music and sports are activities that enrich the soul and are absolutely essential components for happiness in our everyday lives. Moreover, athletics and the arts will continue their transformation into creating a borderless world of tomorrow. Yet, even with the world changing like this, I heard that the International Amateur Orchestra Festival to be held is the first such event on a global scale. It is my hope that Japan can make this international contribution and that JAO will become the central point from which friends throughout the world are made.
In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have come from many different places to support this international festival and make it possible. And, I would like to ask you to enjoy the music you are about to hear.
